With Week 1 of the regular season almost here, there are still some moves the Steelers can make to help bolster the team depth.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers enjoyed a strong offseason, that doesn’t mean the team should be done bringing in more talent leading up to the regular season getting underway. The fact of the matter is that multiple teams in the AFC got even better than last campaign.
While Pittsburgh looked outstanding at times in 2020, they suffered an early postseason exit. In what could be Ben Roethlisberger’s final season in town, they’ve got to be aggressive. Here’s a look at three players Pittsburgh could add late this summer to help things out.
Cornerback Quinton Dunbar would be a smart addition
When it comes to cornerback depth, the Steelers truly do need some help here. How about a guy like Quinton Dunbar? Dunbar was released by the Lions about three weeks ago right before the start of the preseason. He’s got loads of experience, as the former undrafted free agent has suited up for Washington and Seattle.
While injuries have hampered him in recent years, Dunbar has been able to do some good things on the field. In 2019, he had four interceptions. Pittsburgh would be wise to give him a call.
Offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz
Another player to keep in mind would most definitely be offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Pittsburgh’s run blocking last season was nothing short of atrocious, no one can deny that. Adding a player of Schwartz’s caliber would be fantastic. He’d make a difference whenever his number is called.
The concern with Schwartz is his back. However, if he’s fully healthy and ready to get back to business in the trenches, Pittsburgh should try and get him to town.
Quarterback Cam Newton would be a solid backup
Last but not least, what about Cam Newton? On Tuesday, the veteran signal-caller was surprisingly cut by the New England Patriots, with the team going with Mac Jones as the starter. Newton could head to the Steelers as a backup and be quite the option should something happen to Roethlisberger.
Roethlisberger is no stranger to injuries, and the concern grows with his climbing age. With Newton looking for a new home, Pittsburgh could be a great landing spot for him at the end of the day.
