What does latest Carson Wentz update mean for Jacob Eason?

With Carson Wentz getting ready to return to practice, what does this mean for quarterback Jacob Eason moving forward?

Good news has arrived for the Indianapolis Colts, as Carson Wentz is set to return to practice with the team. After undergoing foot surgery earlier this summer, Wentz is already getting himself close to being fully healthy and it looks like he’s now got a great shot to play Week 1.

As exciting as this is for the Colts, it’s some not-so-great news for Jacob Eason, as he was getting ready to presumably start the season-opener if Wentz was sidelined. Now, it’s back to the bench – likely – for Eason. But, could this Wentz news open the door for something else to go down?

Jacob Eason will now return to the bench if Carson Wentz is able to go Week 1

Eason has looked strong during the preseason. This includes him balling out in the victory over the Vikings on Saturday. In the 12-10 win, Eason was 16-of-27 in his pass attempts for 132 yards. Sam Ehlinger struggled when he took the snaps, throwing two interceptions.

While he’s still young, Eason showed flashes of brilliance and he’s no doubt got the ability to be a starter in this league. If Wentz is the long-term play for the Colts, though, considering trading Eason while his stock is hot wouldn’t be a bad idea.

At the same time, with Wentz’s injury history, keeping Eason and making sure he’s ready to rock the second his number is called would be wise too. Who knows, maybe Eason eventually takes over as the starter down the road this fall.

For now, however, what we do know is that Wentz is on track to open the new campaign running the offense. If for some reason Wentz can’t play in the first game of the year, Eason will have quite the opportunity to let everyone know the job should be his.
