Patrick Mahomes’ message to Chiefs Kingdom after Super Bowl loss: ‘We will be back’

Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After a brutal Super Bowl 55 loss, Patrick Mahomes let Kansas City Chiefs fans know that they’ll be back next year.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered Super Bowl Sunday hoping to make some history. They had planned to become the first team since the 2004-2005 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls. If anyone could pull off this feat, it was Patrick Mahomes. But, unfortunately, he couldn’t.

Kansas City ended up losing 31-9 to the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55. With Chiefs fans stinging and upset following the loss, Mahomes reassured them in a postgame tweet saying that they will be back in 2021.

Mahomes had a ton working against him in Super Bowl 55

Even though many expected Mahomes to pull off some magic, he simply could not pull it off against Tampa Bay.

Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense were already at a disadvantage entering the big game. Starting left tackle Eric Fisher tore his Achilles in the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz has been out of action since Week 6 due to a back injury. Starting in their place were Mike Remmers and Andrew Wylie, who allowed a grand total of 18 pressures against Tampa Bay’s defense, the most in a playoff game since 2010, per Pro Football Focus.

Then, there was his receiving corps. Usually, the pass-catchers on Kansas City are a sure-thing and help out Mahomes when it matters most. But during Super Bowl 55, the Chiefs wideouts and tight ends dropped pivotal passes. As a whole, the Chiefs caught 26-of-46 passes from Mahomes and not one of those receptions were for a touchdown.

On the night, Mahomes went 26-of-49 for 270 yards and two interceptions.

This will be a game that the Chiefs would like to forget, but they have a whole offseason to figure things out and improve the roster for the 2021 campaign. Mahomes will no doubt use this as fuel as he prepares to help the Chiefs make their third-consecutive Super Bowl trip next year.
