Chan Gailey’s resignation is positive sign for Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins now will hire an offensive coordinator to help with the development of Tua Tagovailoa in his second season.

On Tuesday, Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier stated that the franchise would be moving forward with rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. By Wednesday, things could be looking up.

Veteran coach Chan Gailey resigned after one year as Dolphins offensive coordinator. The team announced Gailey’s departure on Wednesday morning.

This is perhaps a surprise to Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who stated he believed all his staff members would return for the 2021 season. However, Gailey’s departure might be one that’s a blessing in disguise.

“I want to thank Chan for all of his hard work and dedication in what was a unique year,” Flores said in a statement. “He played an important role on the staff and in the development of our young roster. I wish him all the best.”

Gailey’s departure could mean wonders for Tagovailoa and the downfield offense

Gailey joined the staff following a four-year retirement stint. The 69-year-old had worked extensively in the past with journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, being his coach for five seasons on different rosters.

Gailey’s presence was also required to help with the development of Tagovailoa. The former No.5 pick was far from a bust in his rookie season, going 6-3 as a starter on the year. However, the biggest concern came in his turnover ratio late.

All five of Tagovailoa’s interceptions came in the final four games of the season, three coming in Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills.

From college, Tagovailoa showed the ability to extend plays deep downfield with a loaded arsenal at Alabama. This season, Gailey’s play-calling was more designed for the Crimson Tide product to win in the short to intermediate level. Tagovailoa’s average pass only traveled 6.3 yards per throw.

Miami now must find a coordinator that isn’t afraid to spread the ball downfield and show off Tagovailoa’s potential. However, the team will still need to add better weapons via free agency and the draft heading into the impending season.

Tagovailoa looks to be the future of the franchise. Resignation or not, Gailey’s departure might be a monumental win for the quarterback moving forward.
