The ESPN Monday Night Football crew has upset Patrick Mahomes‘ mother already.
Like the rest of us, Randi Mahomes is watching the Monday night game between her son’s Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens from outside of M&T Bank Stadium. Though Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick are a brand-new crew, Levy hits that third E in Clyde Edwards-Helaire so hard, but will not pronounce the -rick at the end of her son’s given name at all.

Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is named after his father Patrick Lavon Mahomes Sr. His father went by Pat Mahomes during his 12-year MLB career with six franchises, most notably the Minnesota Twins and the New York Mets. Though they have the same name, it’s pretty easy way to differentiate the two. While Patrick Mahomes may be cool with Pat, his mom is not at all.
This shouldn’t be this hard. It’s not like trying to pronounce Archie Manning‘s oldest son Cooper Manning’s first name correctly. It’s like cookie and not chicken coop. Had Cooper played in the NFL like his dad and two younger brothers Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, we would know there are at least two different ways to pronounce the name Cooper. Who would have thought?
There are other guys in the league who you can refer to by nicknames among your friends. While Matthew Stafford may be cool with Matt, unlike Matt McConaughey, don’t call Philip Rivers Phil, because he will try to ground you without swearing as if one of his 11 kids did something wrong. Nunc Coepi is harder to pronounce than Patrick Mahomes, yet we know how to pronounce both.
Mahomes is a grown-ass man with a fiancee and more money than God. Too bad he is his mom’s son and she can still tell him what to do because she gave birth the greatest quarterbacking talent in the history of the planet. So if Momma Mahomes wants the fourth-most important NFL broadcasting crew to call her eldest son Patrick, then they should do that from now on.
Mitchell Trubisky may have been benched, but there’s a mom reason we don’t call him Mitch.
