Chargers lose Chris Harris as injury bug continues to bite

Chargers cornerback Chris Harris will miss a month or more with a foot injury.

The Los Angeles Chargers were already the walking wounded, so maybe it shouldn’t be a shock that yet another player is set to miss extended time with injury.

This time it’s starting cornerback Chris Harris, who suffered a foot injury against the Carolina Panthers and is now expected to miss 4-6 weeks, according to Ian Rapoport.

Specifically, Harris told Josina Anderson he bruised the third and fourth metatarsals in his right foot while also suffering a foot sprain. He won’t need surgery.

Without Harris, Los Angeles could turn to backup Michael Davis or former starter Desmond King II. Working in the Davis’ favor, Pro Football Focus graded him fifth among Chargers’ defenders against the Panthers.

Chris Harris is one of a handful of injured Chargers.

The Chargers picked up the former Broncos Pro Bowler on a two-year deal this spring with an eye on adding versatility to their secondary. At this point, availability is what Los Angeles would covet the most across their entire defense.

Harris joins a lengthy injury list which already included safety Derwin James, who was lost for the season before it even began. Along with James, four more defensive players for the Chargers are on IR, including defensive end Melvin Ingram.

Going into the game with the Panthers, LA was also without linebacker Nick Vigil. That’s only focusing on the defensive side of the ball. Center Mike Pouncey is on IR while quarterback Tyrod Taylor and right guard Trai Turner missed out on Sunday.

Nor was Harris the only Charger to come out injured on Sunday. Wide receiver Mike Williams suffered a hamstring injury while right tackle Bryan Bulaga picked up a back problem.

Head coach Anthony Lynn has his work cut out for him getting the ravaged lineup ready to face the Buccaneers next week.
